How to Plan a Burial Service

Burial services in one form or another have been a part of human communities for millennia. When it comes time to make arrangements for a burial service on behalf of a deceased family member, it can be challenging and daunting as every funeral is a deeply personal event. This graveside service  guide outlines the major decisions that need to be made when meeting with a funeral director.

Reasons to Hold a Burial Service

Graveside Natural Setting: An outdoor graveside services can be a comforting farewell with the natural elements, open sky, gardens and space. The emotional and spiritual comforts of the natural surroundings can be keenly felt.

Religious Requirements: There are religious reasons families choose burial services over any other final care option. For example, the Orthodox faith believe strongly only in burial with cremation not accepted as part of a church service.  Jewish families and those practicing Islamic traditions also have strong religious and social commitments to burial.

Presence and Witnessing: Burial can be a meaningful farewell to a loved one, with the witnessing of the person being buried an emotional release.  The family can dress the deceased, carry to and from vehicles, and place the coffin on the lowering device.  All of which can be emotionally important.

Selection of Cemetery

You may already have a licence for a burial site (also known as grant or interment right).  Generally an existing site can only be used with the licence holders permission.  If the licence holder has died a licence transfer can be arranged with appropriate permissions obtained.

If there is no such site in existence, you will need to select a cemetery and location appropriate to your needs and budget. We will be able to assist in this together with the cemetery of your choosing.

  • Unlike when you purchase a house (where the structure and the land are yours to do with as you like); when you buy a cemetery property, such as a burial plot, mausoleum crypt or vault; you are merely buying the right to inter (or bury) an individual (or individuals) in that specific location. The property you now have the rights over remains the property of the cemetery and grave digging (also known as interment) fees apply..
  • The placement of any monument will be subject to permit fees as specific to the individual cemetery.
  • Just like when you buy a house, the cost of a burial licence will vary widely, depending on the location.
  • As previously mentioned, there are other costs involved with the burial, such as the fees charged by the cemetery for the "opening and closing" of the site, permitting a headstone or monument and its installation.  Larger coffins and caskets also are more expensive as specific graves may need to be chosen or dug wider.
